I am wanting to block outgoing connections for certain apps, like limewire, bittorrent etc.

Would be good if i could do this on an application basis.

I would like it if this could be done without the user knowing to stop employees using such applications.

Can the built in firewall do this or do i need antoher application?

Little Snitch looks pretty good, but don't know if you can just set up the rules and not have it alert you with a pop-up each time?!

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

You can configure the MacOSX firewall to block outgoing connections using the Terminal application (eg Unix command line) if you want to. This will make it more difficult for users to play with the settings - but probaly would stop the most detirmined 'technical' employee if they have sudo access to the admin account :)

There are a few article around that will get you started, such as:

http://www.greasydaemon.com/macosx/macfirewall/
http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2005/03/15/firewall.html

If you would rather use a GUI windows you can look at products to configure the above without using a Terminal window such as:

SunShield (http://www.sunprotectingfactory.com/)
Flying Buttress (http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/flyingbuttress.html)

I expect there are others too.
