I would agree with you that the video driver is buggy. My most common issue is while coming up from a clean boot, the machine will freeze at about where the 32 bit video driver is loaded. (Right after the main XP load screen is finished and the screen goes black for a few seconds). About 1/3 of the times I boot fresh, the machine will not load the video. I thought at first that the box was just shutting down, but it's hanging not completeing the boot, just without video. You have to power the box off and on the reboot, it asks if you want to come up into safe mode, showing that the boot process didn't complete.
