macbook pro weirdness

Everything really runs pretty well, beyond the video issue (although much better with hardware acceleration turned off.

I have a couple random issues, wanted to see if everyone else had them too.

-date/time: seems to never stick, each time I login in to windoze, and sometimes osx it is off and I need to do a manual synch to a time server

-power options: screen saver doesn't seem to come up, or have the options for powering the screen down after time.

The time has something to do with the Time Zone offset. I think OS X is setting the system time with the offset from GMT and Windows is expecting the system time to be GMT. I just set my Windows time zone to the opposite of what it it should really be, for expample I should be in the Pacific Time Zone (GMT-8) so I set it for Singapore (GMT+8) and now the time is correct. I'm not sure how this will affect the software I use. I suspect some web sites I visit will give me things with the time shifted to GMT+8, but I haven't really noticed yet.

I too have noticed that the screen saver never appears, but I have no idea why.

Another behavior I've noticed is it seems like my optical drive is really slow when installing software. It took an unusually long amount of time to install VS.NET 2003. At least I assume it's due to the DVD drive.

Thanks for the GMT trick. Will try that out.

wish the screensaver thing worked. If I know I am going to be away I installed wizmo from Steve gibson. You make a shortcut of the app and enter a command monoff is what I used. So it blacks out the screen if I want to keep windoze rolling.

I have used that app for years on various tablets when I just want to listen to music but not take up system resources. Unfortunately, it doesn't really turn the monitor off because of the same power issues.

Screensaver on Windows XP Pro SP2 on 20" iMac works fine here...I get the default Windows logo bouncing around like any other install. I didn't do anything to make it happen.

But you have a working Intel integrated graphics driver, right? I am thinking the MBP screen saver issues are related to the lacking of a proper video driver...

If you go into Display Properties, Screen Saver tab, the screen savers work if you click on preview. However I experiance the same issue of them not coming on automatically, and the power settings not working on the Macbook Pro. I have a iMac at home that works fine with screen saver.(not sure about the power settings) My thoughts are is that something is telling windows that it is always active thus it never goes to screen saver. I am going to try and disable some of the devices that we don't have drivers for yet and see if that helps.

Actually no, a 20" iMac....and like I said, I didn't do anything btut turn off hardware acceleration.....

Here's a fix for the issue with the screensaver not coming on when running Windows XP on the MacBook:

It's not really a true fix. It doesn't dim the screen or support the power management features, but at least you can get the screensaver to come on automatically until apple manages to fix the actual cause.

You can create a batch file for XP to run on startup that will sync the time with a public internet time server
