im a sys admin a fairly large private company, and have LONG been attempting to get the owners to move away from proprietary windows crap, into a homebrewed app environment. at first, i pushed them to go with any distro on *nix they wanted. after many failed attempts, they just couldnt get the hang of it. (these are all fairly computer illiterate people)
i switched after countless headaches with redhat after god knows how many years. i started off with a mini, and was instantly sucked in. several tens of thousands of dollars later... ive replaced everything i own, and now use macs exclusively.
then... one day, the owner saw a new imac... and based on appearance alone, he wanted one for his home. excited, i quickly agreed to give him a crash course, and get it setup. he has now purchased a powermac and powerbook, and loves the apple platform.
so.. now the apple is a possibility for company use. i can create what i need with it, without too much of an issue. however, some still cant get used to the os. so when the intel line came out, and the possibility of dual booting popped up... i was excited again.
however... ive got one snag. i have only been able to play with the dual booting on a new macbook for a short period, and the resolution didnt jump out at me. basically... i need a way to promote a standard boot cycle if the machine is rebooted remotely. (vnc, remote desktop, whatever) the way it appears to sit now... it will wait indefinitely for someone to choose an OS before loading.
is there a way, (or is it there, and im missing it) to promote one or the other to load after 'X' timeframe (ie: 5 seconds, 10 seconds, etc) automatically, as its done with grub and even windows boot loaders? unfortuantely... this is a make it or break it item for me. i have a purchase order for a few dozen mini's sitting on my desk burning a hole, and just taunting me. :D
can anyone offer any insight or a solution?
