Looks like narf has done it.

It won't be long now. :)

Can't wait! Hopefully, since current Intel models use all other standard hardware, there won't be any issue with drivers for devices.

Way to go, narf!

Those pictures seem real, but are at a pretty low resolution. I would be more convinced if they had pictures of windows loaded showing the desktop. Most likely they haven't been able to get that far yet. This is still very cool though.

FAKE.

Have a closer look at this pic:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32436196@N00/110650771/

Look at the bottom right of the 'screen'.

Why does it stick out OVER the bezel?

Because it's been 'shopped in, that's why.

Looks legit to me. Only reason there is some overlap is because of the blur and the bright white bar at the bottom. Besides the pic doesn't have any editing tags in it so it looks untouched. Any chance you could share some more info on this narf? I know you can't give too many details as you are after the cash but it would be nice to know a bit more.

The photos are by an active member that has been contributing to the project and has kept his recent advancements secret. It's not a fake, we should be booting this week.

I have been talking with another member of Narf's team and from everything I have heard and seen so far, it seems that this is legitimate progress. Im looking forward to giving away this cash.

Yeah, narf doesn't seem like one to fake such an image. Curious, however, if he is writing a CSM, this should boot any other OS that uses BIOS too, right? I'd like to upgrade to Vista when it's released.

Here's to hoping for a solution soon!

Yea any OS should work in theory unless they write a CSM thats tweaked for XP only. I wonder if narf could possibly share their VGA solution for the imac though assuming its separate from the CSM or wharever they did. I'm in the same boat like alot of others are where we got the vista installer going but can't see anything on the screen thanks to a lack of UGA support. With that I think vista would work since we got vista's incomplete EFI going.

My biggest concern about someone writing a CSM is compatibility with OS X in the future. It?s a known fact that Apple updates their firmware from time to time and VERY frequently with OS Revs. What is the end result of installing a CSM and Apple trying to update EFI at a later date? Last thing I would want to do is brick my MBP by simply running an update. I wish Apple would stop being an A-Holes and simply update everyone's firmware with CSM update. It?s well within their power.

I believe the pictures are accurate. Narf knows what he's doing or at least his team has enough people who understand the technical details.

Way to go, Narf!

Be patient, man. Don't expect him to share anything (VGA was a huge hurdle according to narf), and as he says, he's not giving that piece of the puzzle away before the contest is over. Once it's over, I'm sure you'll be able to use whatever pieces he has to try to get Vista booting-- just be patient and wait till he and his team are finished :)

Wonder if he's gotten it to the desktop yet or not. Does narf have some kind of blog or anything where they post updates on progress (not just the phosos)?

He says that he has somehow patched the NT Kernel to resolve the VGA problem. fyi.

smartin53
12th March 2006, 09:44 PM
ok exactly how are you getting this info? Also if this is a patched kernel then that means it won't work for vista too :/

whoever this narf guy is said "I'm definitely not going to reveal any details about this because getting the VGA working is a big piece of the puzzle. Just don't assume the XP kernel hasn't been patched a bit. You've never seen a widescreen boot like this because you don't hack the NT loader...enough said."

my shipping date says "On or before March 30th" I think there should be an extension
someone else also mentions being able to install xp sp2 but they are not able to get past install

xp media center boots on PC with EFI in machine sold by gateway.

narf should open up about his progress.

Indeed, way to go narf!

Although:
narf should open up about his progress.

While agreeing with thebalaa about narf's secrecy, it would have to be said that the stakes are VERY high...

I, a fundamental capitalist, age-long believer in the power of the markets and greed, are strangely finding myself agreeing with a not-so recent (22/02/06) post on the osx86project: Geeks and Greed.
May it be that this contest is doing us more harm than good? It seems that there are an awful amount of people holding back because of the prize.

There is no way of knowing whether we would be booting Microsoft OS'es sooner with or without the money... but this creepy feeling doesn't go away...

In any case, all you smarter and intel-mac owning people out-there, best of luck!

"narf should open up about his progress."

I think this is ridiculous... yes, the contest may be currently preventing the sharing of ideas about this whole dual boot thing but who really cares??? Is it all that improtant for you guys to have windows on your macbooks NOW?!?!?! If there are some really intelligent programmers out there who want to go for the money, then let 'em. If they don't get it within 3 weeks then we can all come together and get this thing working.

But until then, there is no reason narf (and his team) should share their ideas with the entire "dual booting world" just so some smuck can do a small part of the work and walk away with 12K. If nobody gets it by the deadline then what did we lose? A few months without having Windows XP on our macbooks/imacs, not exactly a life and death situation. So everyone just chill out and let narf and his team finish up in peace and take down the 12K, they deserve it. They have done the majority of the grunt work.

We've waited this long-- what's 2 more weeks? Worst case scenario, the contest ends and the money goes to charity and the effort goes public. The contest started small and grew quickly-- I don't blame anyone who's putting honest hard work into this for wanting to protect their own work when there's money at stake. But the whole idea was to provide an incentive for people to come up with a really good solution-- and so if someone wants to take up that challenge, that's their perogative. Honestly maybe without the contest people would be able to run XP by now-- but how viable of a solution would it be? With the contest, the author is able to set some specific requirements for it to be a feasable solution and I think that might be where the money comes into play-- reaching a certain level of quality.

If anything the only thing you can say is that you wish there were people making this kind of progress who are sharing ;) Props to narf for how far they've gotten. Just be patient.

My MBP has been here for three weeks as of this coming Tuesday. Right now I'm carrying around my MBP AND my ThinkPad X31. . . I'm going to have to see a chiropractor shortly. All told I?m carrying around 10+ pounds because Apple is a jack***.
