I don't know about Windows, but I also get a high pitched squeal when in OS X. I can't tell if it's interference from the power, or of it's a software issue (I notice the sound changes sometimes when I move the mouse or press on the keyboard)... but it is damn annoying.

I've spoken to Apple about it but, as expected, they deny this is a 'fault' and right now i'm just waiting to see if my problem persists before complaining further.

Its very strange, it doesnt always happen in XP for me and when it does its almost as if when either the GPU is busy or the HD is being used the squeal goes away.

To get rid of the high pitched squeal in OSX, start up photobooth, then go to activity monitor and force quit out of photobooth. It will be gone until you reboot.

Thanks pmuse... i'll try that.

I do say though, that sounds so random! How did you come to the discovery of using photobooth to solve such a problem? It's as bizarre as opening and closing your fridge door to fix a broken lightbulb in the kitchen!

It is bizarre. If you let yourself tune into the whine, it would drive you mad. Best to either use the photobooth fix or ignore it.

As far as the whine in Windows goes, I've noticed it is a different pitch and only happens on occasion, such as after coming out of hibernation. Anway, I've noticed that for me it is fixed if I unplug the power cord and plug it back in. (MBP) Again, a bizarre fix, but what are you gonna do?

For the whine issue in osx: look here: http://speedit.increw.org
there are two small apps, that will help, as far as I understood, to better manage the two cores in osx: it will kill the whine and help the system to get less hot.
the whine comes up when the processor is idle. and these apps will fix that (until apple will give us an update)
they are in the final testings, so we will soon be able to test it.
