Does anyone know if there's a hack or application that gives the user control of when the fans kick in?

That bit of noise really doesn't bother me at all, but keeping my MBP bearably warm really does.

As you can tell by the silence, I dont think so. I wish there was. Based on previous posts, these are controlled by the firmware. OS X may have knowledge of the firmware whereas Windows XP doesnt. I am very interested to know if vista fares any better.

Seems like everyone is jumping to major results when the smaller but greater demands for the machine are really never addressed.

shux.

I completely agree. Keep in mind, that since the release of Bootcamp (Beta), Apple has effectively quelled any external development. Unfortunately, there is no longer a reason for developers to devote time to fix the fans, etc... since apple will just make it irrelevant with the final release of bootcamp in Leopard.

What with Leopard coming out, it's great that we're all ramping up our systems for it.

Although, I have yet to see any kind of specifications on what kind of machinery it's going to run native XP Apps alongside OSX. That's going to take massive amounts of ram just to do what we're all doing now (generally; games, favorite apps, etc.), not to say that isn't great.

When the serious buyers down the road need applications that only are developed for XP and need 2gigs of ram alone to run, let's all cross our fingers and hope that XOM or BootCamp are still around to do what we're doing now. It's going to really suck if what I'm suggesting (no third party booting) is squashed.

Anyway, the user fan control I think goes beyond all of this BC, XOM and Leopard functionality. Think of it this way, wouldn't it be nice to have the ability to manually control the fan speed nevertheless?

If I ever plan on taking this machine to a club to spin records or anything, the moisture and heat in the air will make it shut down no matter what. Unless I get some manual fan control. Same goes for anyone that wants to use this machine in a really hot climate or outside in the sun.

Without more fan control, I can see the machines generally running hotter than they could(should?), thusly making their lifespan quite a bit less.
