View Full Version : Hanging at 0% Setup Files

I'm using a Mac Mini Core Duo, and hanging (like other people in the "CD Booting hangs" thread) at Setup is copying files ... 0% on the blue Windows installer screen, after successfully designating my NTFS partition.
Since this is a different problem than the "Patching succeeded" hang, I thought I'd start a new thread. Any tips? Thanks.

Having same problem. Hangs at 0%. I hear if you keep trying it will work. But no success yet. Doing slow format at the moment

After Blanka and myself patched up the xom.efi for 20" iMacs last night, we're stuck at the same spot. The bad sign is the caps lock light won't go on if you press Caps lock.
So, question, are you able to see the light on the caps lock key (at this stage) when pressed?

same with core solo - the f6 trick gets me to the partitioning screen but hanging at 0% ugh

that would be a negative. doesn't light up

Not good..if we get this going tonight, i'll let you know. Otherwise, if anyone find a fix for this, please post here.

Nope, no caps lock light here either. And I tried a slow format, that didn't help. Looks like we're all in the doghouse.

I had the same problem, but I resolved it. Here's how I did it.
I was using Windows XP Pro SP2 originally to install XP on my Mac mini. No matter how many times I tried, the thing wouldn't install (would hang right before it would start copying files).
Therefore, I switched over to an XP Home SP2 installation, and that successfully installed. Therefore I'd suggest either making another XP Pro CD from a different source, or try a different version of XP, like Home.

Ok, i was checking the caps light during the loading of the setup and everything . and it doesn't even comes up with setup is loading. so not sure if that helps
*edit*
correction on the starting up portion. its response time is just uber slow.

i tried my xp sp2 home cd and couldn't get to the partition screen - is that because i already formatted the drive when i was using the pro cd earlier?
in general - when an attempt fails like this, are you guys starting from scratch and reinstalling os x again? or is there a way to recover the msdos partition enough to "try again" without having to do os x all over again?
thanks,
Wes

i did it a few times from scratch, but now all i do is delete the partition and recreate it using the windows xp setup utility.
i get the same outcome, so i am unsure if it is my disc or not. the info about using a windows xp home edition disc sounds promising; i need to find one now...

I've tried from scratch. Tried deleting partition in windows setup. Tried just keeping the partition and reusing over and over. All same effect.

Okay, reducing the Windows C: partition to 4096 MB before installing does NOT help. Still stuck at 0%.
I just slipstreamed a Windows XP Home SP2 CD from an original XP Home CD, the SP2 installer file from Microsoft, and the patches ... but that's locking up even before I get to the setup screen.

yea I can confirm the making partition smaller doesn't help.

Using my xom.efi ? Are you on a 20" iMac?
I don't want to repeat unecessary steps.

If you havent already tried it (for 20" iMacs) use the attached xom.efi .

No, I'm on a Mini Core Duo and using the original xom. Should I use your xom even if it isn't a 20" iMac?
If your current xom.efi isn't working, it's worth a shot, right?
Edit: something needs to be done about the forum rearranging posts as it pleases.

yes using your efi file. And I'm on a 20".
Thanks a lot for confirming this for me! I guess I'll skip reformatting then and move on in figuring this out another way.

Smaller partition doesn't work for me either (using the newest xom.efi you posted). Same deal, 20" iMac.

All Mac Mini users,
http://forum.onmac.net/showpost.php?p=871&postcount=7
Once downloaded, move back to your home folder, do a sudo cp to CoreServices, then sudo bless it.
Good luck.

I tried the new .efi file with my Mac mini CD, and it doesn't improve things.
I am using a 23" LCD and the original .efi file recognized the resolution of the display as 1920x1200x32@59 and displays the embossed Apple logo and the windows logo at the center of the screen.
The new .efi file offsets this to the top-left. I guess this is what the other user is seeing when he mentions he misses part of the display....
I have managed _once_ to actually get to the patching fase, and after starting the installer is froze at the familiar 0%...
I don't know what I did exactly to get to this point, but I cannot get it to do it again :(

I can reliably get to copying files, but it freezes every time. I tried both the different xom.efi files the 4:39 timestamped one, and the original one in the 0.1 zip file.
I am using an orange and white XP Pro SP2 CD from an action pack. I may try slipstreaming a SP1 cd with SP2.
Question is, is there anything else I can try ?
I already tried NTFS and FAT32, and I see it start to copy files, but it freezes as soon as the 0% progress bar comes up. (maybe a framebuffer problem?)
Really like to replace my Dell at work with a Mac Mini for development. That would be well sweet, though I do prefer OS X really.
I'll post again if I get it working.

I was thinking and am totally unable to verify if this will work but what if someone with a loaded working version makes an image of the xp partition. That would bypass the install process all together. This still might not be a fix but at least it might allow you to boot xp.

The problem is the SCREEN RESOLUTION. Boot into Os X and set the resolution higher than the default 800x600. I set my to 1400x1050 @85 (19" monitor...) and rebooted to the Win Install ... and it started copying files !!!
Copying now. I'll post if it succeeds or fails ... ;-)
I'm using the xom.efi posted in the mini thread, and a XP SP2 OEM disc.

Boot into OS X. Change to a higher screen resolution than 800x600 and try again. I picked 1400x1050, and it worked first time.
I had burned my way through about 5 CDs prior to this. If it looks like it stalls near the start, just hit enter. It might not look like it's doing much, but you should hear the CD reading, then see the 'patching' messages.

I got XP SP2 onto the mac mini through reading and testing stuff suggested here, and I thought I'd post what I did to get it to work...
1) I was able to reliably get to it to the point that it was hanging at the 0% setup files copied...
2) I got the newer xom.efi file from earlier in this thread and "bless"ed it on my osx, and I also set my resolution higher (as suggested earlier in thread)...
3) Next restart into XP install was able to copy files, but the screen was MUCH larger resolution then able to be handled by my moniter (lowly 1028x768 thru vga adapter, with xp throwing up 1280x1024), but I just let it install without being able to see half the screen...
4) XP was now booting but still with the much higher resolution that I was not able to downgrade to my actual resolution
5) Replaced newer xom.efi file (which fixed the 0% hang) with the older xom.efi file (which displayed resolution properly)...
XP then boots perfectly with correct resolution that my monitor can handle!
:^) Thanks to everyone who has been working on these issues and making my mac even better...

For 15 hours I've been testing the MacMini with the new xom.efi (without it I wouldn't install XP) so the screen was screwed-up (only 1280x1024 resolution allowed, so upper-left part of the screen was visible). After reading the quoted post I just replaced the xom.efi with the initial version, blessed it and it worked immediately. Thanks guys
