Okay so I've followed the tutorial on the wiki about 5 times now and still can't replace the default "Hard Drive" Icon on my NTFS Disk partition.

I'm running all the latest updates for OSX and Windows XP on a MacBook Pro 17".

This is what i've done several times now:

1.] Formatted a USB Stick with Disk Utility to MS-DOS System which is FAT16 I think, no FAT32 option as far as I can tell. I have also tried formatting the USB Stick to FAT32 from within Windows XP.

2.] Applied the Windows Icon I want to the USB Stick using Get Info.

*** My USB Stick is labeled "USBDISK" & My NTFS Disk partition is labeled "Windows HD" ***

3.] Opened Terminal and ran:
a] cd /Volumes
b] ls -la
c] cp ._USBDISK ._WindowsHD

4.] Reboot into Windows XP

5.] Open the USB Stick from My Computer & Show Hidden Files

6.] Copy the .VolumeIcon.icns file from the USB Stick to C:\, which to my knowledge is definately Root.

7.] Change the attributes via CMD Prompt in Windows XP as per the wiki, I've also tried the whole process without setting the attributes.

Could someone please shed some light on the situation as this is really starting to piss me off! :D

Ok so I renamed the Windows partition to "Windows". Repeated the whole process.

Now the icon shows on my OSX desktop but not in the bootloader?

Yeah I don't think this actually adds the icon to Bootcamp Bootloader, just in OSX.

"Personalize your bootloader" is the title of the Wiki entry? Even the image used on it is that of the "bootloader"?

As far as I understand, the OSX Desktop drive icons are reflected on the bootloader. I changed my Macintosh drive icon and it is changed in the bootloader?

I consider myself relatively patient :) but is there anyone who can confirm if my bootloader icon should have changed for the NTFS partition? Or is it just for the OSX desktop icon that changes?

You can use CandyBar to do this. Use CandyBar to replace the default hard drive icon to the one you want for Windows XP. All of the hard drives will change to the new icon. Then replace the OS X hard drive icon with the one you want.

Nope, you can't change an NTFS Volume icon via CandyBar... Would be nice though...

My Windows partition resides on an FAT32 partition - but I couldn't change the bootcamp icon either. I was looking at the same wiki entry and think it's a bit misleading : all i've managed to change is the Mac OS icon in bootloader and both disk icons on my OS X desktop.

I've tried several variations of the steps mentioned but to no avail. Is there a way to do it without using CandyBar? If CandyBar can do it then it's obviously modifying something... how to do manually?

Thanks!

If you want to change the boot icons, just get rEFIt. It is easy to make these icons whatever you'd like, and it doesn't care what file system the volumes are using.

rEFIt is also a better solution, because you don't have to remember to hit the option key, and you can change a lot of settings.
