i'm running vista rc2 via bootcamp 1.1.1 on a refurbed 1.83ghz macbook pro, and i've been using it without any major problems for the past 2 months or so. today, as i'm loading an image to view, the computer does a random shutdown. after a reboot, it's ok for a while until i try to load a game, at which point it shuts down again. a few minutes ago, it died again as i was chatting with a friend over aim. the computer is a bit warmer than i remember, and the room i'm sitting in (at home) is a bit warmer than my dorm. perhaps the computer is doing a hard shutdown because of heat? is there any way to verify?

thanks,
charles

Might be due to Vista, I noticed my iMac was hotter when Vista took XP's place.

Does it show the "Windows is shutting down" screen or does it suddenly go black?

It might be that you have one of the batteries that was recalled on the MacBook Pros. I was having problems in both OS X and Windows with it suddenly losing power. A good test to see if this is the problem is to see if the problem occurs with the adapter plugged in.

the battery has been confirmed to NOT be one that falls in the range of the battery recall; also, this happens when the computer is plugged in too. The computer just shuts down instantly to a black screen, no shutting down screen is displayed. it'll do this no matter what battery setting i select in vista (high performance, balanced, power saver) but it doesn't do it in osx no matter what i try. according to my temp logs, the cpu will hit about 84 degrees celcius in vista, and in osx, according to core2duotemp, it'll hit about 88 degrees celcius before throttling down to 1ghz.

also, before the computer started doing this random shutdown, the computer used to make this weird whining noise. it doesn't do it anymore. perhaps this has some bearing to the issue i'm having?

thanks in advance,
charles

ladies and gentlemen,
after running apple hardware test, i get an error. i took it to the apple store, and the genius informed me that my logic board had problems. it's now being repaired under warranty. thanks!
