I recently bought a new dell for someone at work with a Core 2 Duo and Windows XP 64bit. It came with a free upgrade to Vista 64 bit - assuming that Vista 64 bit would be the standard, so I figured why not! Well, when I started configuring the system, I noticed that most of the software I was putting on was 32 bit only anyway so it was not native anyway. Then I looked online at some message boards and people were having problems with some of the software - i.e. Quickbooks.
I havent rolled the system out into production yet, but from my research, it seems that the 32 bit vista will be the most compatible probably until the next windows version.
Seems like mac may be 64 bit friendly before windows.
