View Full Version : How many copies of Windows XP?

I asked this question many weeks ago without an answer so I will try again.

I would like to install Windows XP in two ways:

1) via Bootcamp and a dedicated partition; and,
2) via Parallels

Do I need two copies of Windows XP? One for Bootcamp and one for Parallels?
Or will one copy of Windows XP work in both BootCamp and Parralels?

If it does work, do I need two copies to be "legal" from MS perspective?

As far as I know, since not so long ago Parallels offers Boot Camp support - it lets you use Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. Hence one copy of windows may be enough:)
Try to search for answers here:

These are artickles about Boot Camp support under Parallels

In my experience, the answer is yes.

Because I just installed Windows XP with Bootcamp. Then I used the new feature of parallels to access the partition.

Windows Genuine Advantage puked up, said the hardware changed too much, disabled my key and won't let it run after 3 more days.

If I boot back into boot camp, it appears to be OK. But inside Parallels, it's upset.

What a waste.

I have separate Parallels VM and a bootcamp partition. When I tried to activate in Parallels it came up with the you have already activated this copy of Windows dialogue please phone this number.

So I phoned Microsoft, explained what I was doing and they happily gave me the code to allow activation. So I guess that makes it legal from an MS perspective.

Incidentally I reinstalled my Windows Bootcamp partition and it reactivated straight away after having activated in Parallels VM.
