I installed Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and while it didn't indicate that I was missing any drivers after the initial installation, like you, I didn't have any sound output -- that is, until I installed Apple's sound drivers from the BootCamp drivers package.
Unfortunately for you, Apple doesn't happen to support 64-bit Vista yet... so you may find it difficult to obtain the appropriate sound drivers. Moreover, driver support for the vast majority of third-party accessories is likewise lacking with Vista... so while many new computers (including IntelMacs) might be technically capable of running Vista64, it's still a good idea to stick with Vista32 for awhile longer yet.
