I have successfully installed the ATI driver to run compiz/beryl and emerald smoothly. From what I read, this will work for those of you who have ATI X1xxx, HD series, and newer. All you have to do is follow the Method 2 step by step from this link:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide
Method 1 is only for installing the current driver in Ubuntu repository, and this driver will not work for compiz/beryl and emerald. This would be a good Method for those of you who just want to install the driver to get a better resolution. Otherwise, skip this Method and go to Method 2 for compiz/beryl and emerald compatibility.
Cheers.
