would virtual pc (on a seperate mac) work as an alternative to using a pc with xp on it? It sounds possible because if you open the virtual machine image its got the contents of an hd with xp on it.

I can't see why that wouldn't work. Has anyone tried it?

No...the patch [applies patches] to Windows during install.
My Ideas:
(Ideas for Install[alternatives for those who can't get their cd(s) to work)
1. use WinTel/qemu to install XP and wait for Narf/someone else to post the filles which need to be added/replaced(in the windows image) in order to boot windows on intel macs. My directions...
1. Backup personal data onto an external HD/cd's/dvd's
2. place the os x install cd(which came with our computer) into the superdrive.
3. use disk utility to make two equal partitions(1. XP (msdos filesystem) 2. OSX (hfs+ with journaling))
3. install os x on the OSX volume
4. download the bootloader from the onmac.net
5. copy the xom.efi file into the dualboot folder in the root directory(make it after install using ?+shift+N).
6. type into terminal (inaplications/utilitys folder) "cd /" then "cd dualboot" then "sudo bless --folder . --file xom.efi -setBoot" and type in your login password when promptedomit the quotes !this is case senstitive!
7. restart the computer with any cd in your dirve and press the down arrow key and f4 then enter when the crystal apple logo appears.
8. make sure you see like a list of the partitions
9. press and hold the power button until the computer turns off and hold the mouse button to eject the cd in the drive, then reboot.
10. use a linux live cd to format the secon partition listed in disk utility(labled free space) to the msdos filesystem.
11. in osx make a disk image of it on an external hd(use the compressed format when making the image and then change the extension afterward to ".img")
12. install XP on it using Wintel or something(but make sure that it supports .img disk images(as in not using virtual pc) and can sucessfully install xp.
13. copy the bootfiles that narf (hopefully) will post into the correct destinations within the image file.
14. use disk utiliy to "restore" the disk image onto the msdos partition.
15. eject the cd's reboot, press f2 as many time as you like and select the windows logo.
16. go to onmac.net using internet explorer and wait until the graphics card driver comes out so you can play games!
Idea two... find someone in your area who installed xp on their macs and use their computer or cd(but only if you have bout your own sp2 cd) to install it.
