Although I first looked upon this contest as a good thing, the more I think about it - the more I believe that it is only halting any real progress in discovering a solution. If a solution is not found before the deadline (which in my opinion is unlikely, although I hope I am proved wrong) then extending the time limit will only keep the lines of communication severed between potential collaborators. Yeah, someone will probably come up with a hack-job solution that will be as elegant as shoe-horning a thinkpad into a MacBook case. However, the really elegant solutions only come after bouncing ideas around with each other in a free and unrestricted manner.
Few people solve monumental problems beavering away on their own bedrooms, withholding information and progress from others. Take a look at the open source community - after a little time and collaboration, no obstacle is too great to overcome. The key to solving problems like this is communication. This contest may create an entirely opposite effect to the one the creator intended.
I am as keen as the rest of you to get my hands on a MacBook and use and enjoy it mainly as a mac (as was intended). Due to the nature of my industry (3D computer animation and effects) I unfortunately require windows from time to time as certain 3D programs are not available in OSX (Softimage XSI to name but one). It would also be nice to dispose of my windows/fedora dual boot desktop and use a macbook for all other programs that generally only work on windows (e.g phone syncing software).
I fully intend to run OSX, Linux and Windows XP on my MacBook and know that it can be done. I just think that the lure of money brings out the green-eyed, selfish monster in all of us. This, I'm afraid is always negative and nearly always counter-productive in the long run.
Give the money to charity and let the real progress start. The team who finally crack the problem elegantly will get their reward in other, much more satisfying ways from the community that so desperately wants to dual boot!
Just my five cents worth... I don't intend to offend.
Cheers.
