View Full Version : Apple releases official WinXP on Mac solution

That's right, you can now download a public beta from Apple to boot Windows XP on an Intel Mac. Oh yes, and it includes drivers.
Read all about it yourself: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

i looked for your post...didn't see it so I posted it too. Sorry!
So does this mean you WIN the $1500 video driver prize? hahah!
sandau
5th April 2006, 03:17 PM
And what's the meaning of 'boot camp'....hmmm, very odd beta terminology. What does this mean to our future..
Vaxan
5th April 2006, 03:18 PM
Well the contest didn't say you had to develop the solution to win haha. Anyway, is this going to mean an end for OnMac.net, now that Apple has their own solution and drivers?

I am going to try to extract the driver cd creator and see if I can use that on my current xom install
Ill let you know how it goes

first missing step for me:

5th April 2006, 03:33 PM
Saw this in the ATI thread. Anyway, I believe we have to disable the xom.efi file as I have tried installing the update and when I restart, I get a loud tone with the reboot noise. It then goes back into the xom bootloader menu.
It looks like we will have to repartition and resetup windows also.
How do we bless the original bootloader?
Corey
sandau
5th April 2006, 03:36 PM
same for me. I'm doing backups, probably a good time to do a fresh os x install now that we have a real solution.
i'm not happy about reinstalling os x, but i'm freakin ecstatic that apple released something WITH drivers! OMG PONIES!!
hehe.

I believe that you can just go into system prefs - startup disk and select your OS X startup drive. The bless command just states what to boot up from and startup disk does the same. You can do it the unix way (Why? dunno but correct my command if it's wrong) by typing this into terminal:
sudo bless -folder /system/library/coreservices
But startup disk would do the same.

Oh yeah and startup disk menu installed

koltz

That got rid of the bootloader, but still didn't do the update. Just gave me the tone this time and booted into Mac OS X.

According to Apple you can create a new Windows Partition with Boot Camp while leaving your OSX partition intact, so no you don't need to reinstall OSX.
koltz
5th April 2006, 03:51 PM
But if the firmware isn't taking because of the XOM, we would have to do a fresh install of everything. I reblessed the original and still isn't taking, so a backup and format I think will be beneficial.

we realize this, but we are people that can't get the firmware to update to install and run boot camp, we just get a tone on reboot. So we might have to brick our installs and start from scratch because of our efi changes.
Tip
5th April 2006, 03:55 PM
Better would be to start from scratch. Just because you only are allowed to have ONE partition on the drive. You can backup your OS X installation (carbon copy cloner) if you delete the xom-modifications (deleting the
hacked botloader) and copy ist back after rapartitioning.
Well I will start fron scratch again at least...

I was answering DeathChills questions, Is it right that all these problems you guys are having is because you have previously used the OnMac solution?
I'm desperately waiting to see how this solution fares when isntalled on a fresh mac (one that hasn't done the OnMac thing yet) and how well the video card drivers work and if games work.

Yeah, but at least it is official from Apple. This will make my life easier when I order labs of Mac's for the HS this year. Will make Apple money. Anyway, I have to zero out my hard drive right now as it isn't liking the repartitioning from the xom install. Says 58 minutes. Who is trying the setup, maybe we should get some using Apple directions and some setting up two partitions with one staying empty to see if we can do that also?

this is going to make my car project a lot more interesting. I've been working on setting up a core solo mini with a 7" touchscreen...having the option of front row or some of the XP car solutions will be fabulous as the XP car solutions are much more robust with better options (for now) but I like the mini form factor and OS X / Front Row.

I think this is going to make them a TON of money. They can sell the new iBook/MacBook to schools with options of both OS's available. I can't see how they can lose on that ticket.

i've just erased the whole of my HD (17" iMac) and am about 60% through the install of OS X (on the second DVD now)

at the moment i dont think anyone actually knows, no one has gone through the whole process yet (reformatting is a daunting task, eh? lucky for me i got my iMac yesterday so i dont need to worry about backups etf)

I must disagree. It give the use a undeinable way to see the Mac experience vs. the Windows experience on the same rock-stable hardware. And it has been great, even with the MacBook lite-solution we've had going so far.
Speaking from the higher-ed perspective, nothing has given me a better chance of keeping what Macs I have left in print/film/publishing courses and expanding them into the other labs. With "MUST BOOT XP" as a requirement on so many of the idiotic spec sheets, the pointy-haired admin's shove down our throats.
Being able to run BOTH OS's is a huge boon, and this really allows the MacBook Pro users to take advantage of the Intel XP optimized versions of Photoshop and the rest, which are markedly faster under XP on the MacBook compared to their emulated bretheren.

5th April 2006, 04:26 PM
Damn it, due to the GUID/MBR paration map OnMac does, you simply can't convert to this. Ah. Reformat time.
koltz
5th April 2006, 04:32 PM
As for the BootCamp partitioning, I believe it does partition modification and resizing. It still should be seperate partitions as Apple would have a hell of a time with getting XP to support HFS+. But I suppose they could setup a virtual drive format like VPC and build in that support into the new firmware.
30 minutes to go on my zeroing the drive.

That is exactly why apple will never license OSX for PCs...because like you, thousends would NOT buy a mac. If they keep OSX closed, they guarantee people buy Macs.

koltz

Yes somebody posted a link in one of the driver threads. But I doubt the ATI driver will work as there still is no hook into the XOM efi file. It is loading a generic driver to get VGA working. So even with that, it shouldn't work. That is why people were trying to load a different BIOS.

Well I guess you do have a point, do you need to reformat the Windows partition. I guess somebody will try it. It is probably dependant on how Apple is loading the MBR partition and if it is the same as the XOM solution.

That's true. I'm sure it will function in largely the same way, but there will be some minor difference in the code to distinguish it from the 'amateur' method.
I just don't want to have to re-install the programs I've put onto OS X as well as all my music. It's just a hassle. I don't really have much on Windows yet so I don't mind reformatting that partition. I'd like to keep the Mac OS X one though.
koltz
5th April 2006, 04:52 PM
I hear ya on the X partition. I just getting more into OS X yesterday installing more apps and such, but plugged in an external and copied over the apps. That is one nice thing about OS X, is for the most part, all files that a program requires are in that hidden directory within the application. So drag them over and it should be good.
I forgot I could cancel the zeroing after a few minutes and 30 minutes left for my installation (Apple time, about 2 hours).

I got it installed almost straight away, windows XP installed from my original without any hassle what so ever... lovely..
One problem I encountered was that after installing the driver CD my XP install would bluescreen on boot. I Booted into the last known good config. and tried the install again. after that windows XP has booted flawlessly since.

Where we are now is good for the hardcore users, and people like me who do a lot of development / training on both platforms, and want to carry one unit that can do it all seamlessly, legally, and use it as a way to get more users onto OS-X. And right now it cover's for Acrodobia and Microsoft's slothlike nature in producing universal binaries. (XP Photoshop CS on the MacBook is so much faster than the Rosetta emualted version it's amazing). And that's with the motely hacker drivers we had... Can't wait to see what the MacBook benches at when my full re-install is done.
Ultimately a vm-ware style solution is what I want. Keep XP sessions in the box, with OS-X as the primary OS... it will come. It's such a great time to be a computer nerd right now.

I got some answers for you guys trying to avaoid reformatting:
I extracted the Windows Drivers...exe file from the boot camp package. I installed it on the XP system installed with the blanka efi. All drivers install just fine, except the ATI card.
So the answer to the question "reformat or not" is a definate reformate.
The firmware can't handle the 2 different partions, i believe. As mentioned before, our xom.efi loader is not compatible and the 10.4.6 update and the new firmware are the bridge between the ati efi and the windows system.
Best regards!

I'm not sure WHY you would want to do this, but the Apple Boot Camp requires dual-booting. The XpOnMac solution can work without Mac OS X. Essentially, you want to do this: Install OSX and create the Boot Camp disc to get all the drivers. Download and install XpOnMac, and skip to the part where you bless it. Reboot, select Windows, and install it. That should do it. That being said, I would recommend leaving an HFS+ paration around for install XOM upgrades. However, why do you want a mac if you want to just run Windows.

Does anybody else think that this is strange that Apple has a solution after the source code is releasted? If you look at the screen shots from http://images.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/pdf/Boot_Camp_Beta_Setup_Guide.pdf
Look at step 3. The setup looks like the screen from xom. Also on page 14 of the pdf you see that you can choose your startup disk. See how the windows folder is called "NO NAME" just like xom.

As for Apple copying xom, I doubt it. Apple has been rumored to be supporting virtualization for a while now, and this is a first step. I think they just released it public because they saw there was a demand for it.

could someone please explain the steps for going back from the OnMac version of the dualboot to the Boot Camp one?
thanks very much.

The BootCamp does it for you. Just follow the PDF instructions, very simple.

Use a clean original XPSP2 cd, not a slipstreamed one. In the last phase of the Windows XP install on my MacBook as I type this. Very smooth.

Boot Camp resizes the HFS+ paration on the drive. Simply install it on a single paration machine and then let it resize.

From what i have gathered, if you have installed xp on mac, aka the xom and that, then yes you have to reformat and start again. But if not then your free to go, run the installer package thats in the dmg

Yes, it requires you to activate within 30 days. So you have until then to get a code if you can't use that one (which wouldn't be legal).

Not having tried it yet, but it sounds as simple as booting up and holding option down, insert windows cd and boot from it. Start over by reinstalling/reformatting the partition.
Why would you abort the driver install? That's almost as bad as aborting a firmware update in the middle by pulling out the plug.

These aren't huge issues (taken from FAQ) but no right clicking without using an external mouse may be a bummer for many. The sound issue seems like they'll correct it perhaps in the next beta hopefully.
Ordered a MPB 1.83 today (and two 1GB ram chips) based solely on this apple news alone and should have it tomorrow to try all this stuff out.
While booted into Windows XP, I still hear sound coming from the built-in speaker even with headphones plugged in.
The Boot Camp Beta audio driver for Windows XP does not currently support rerouting sound.
Does the MacBook Pro trackpad work the same in Windows XP as it does in Mac OS X?
Basic tracking works, but acceleration, scrolling, and right-click support are not available in Windows.

OK, I'm posting this through XP on my 2 GHz, 2 GB, 256 X1600 MacBook Pro and I must say.... this is by far the fastest Windows computer I've ever used. Oh they irony!
Notes:
-It is unbelievably responsive. Installation was smooth, without any hitches and took around 45 minutes (not including the time installing Boot Camp, burning the drivers CD, and slipstreaming myself an SP2 disc).
-I used an XP Upgrade disc btw and it worked without any problems. That may because it's a volume license disc though.
-Also, in OS X my MacBook makes that high-pitched hissing noise when the MagSafe is plugged in. In XP, it doesn't.
-Apple added a little icon in the taskbar with a slider to control screen brightness since the keys don't work.
-The eject disc key works
-ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't work, but ctrl-shift-esc does.
-The MacBook display actually makes Windows look good.

No, I don't. Trust me, Apple didn't steal the XOM source code. As for step 3, no that doesn't look like the screen from xom. In the xom solution there were two fat32 partitions, one EFI, one created in Mac OS X. Apple's method has two unknown partitions in there. That's just what Windows looks like when you install.
Apple did not steal this.

it's all going to be open source still. the development that's been done here, is miles ahead in regards to the tweaking world. if the ATI drivers for OnMac are even remotely close to being finished, I'm sure these Apple drivers will just serve as a benchmark to be better and more robust.

I dont care what apple releases, someone else did it first. Now we can steal from apple and make our solution even better.
1. People want a solution now. So the people who want it now will take the time to reinstall.
2. It is officially supported by Apple who has direct links to ATI and Intel. They will be releasing updated drivers as time goes. Plus it is smart to use their solution as when they update to 10.5, you probably will be good to go. Trust me, I have been using X since the 10.0 days, and Apple loves to break stuff like this.
3. Open Source is great, but Apple is releasing this free. How don't we know Apple has had this working before the xom release was done? They aren't allowed to publicize it until Jobs approves of it. They probably had CSM in an early stage for a long while. And if they didn't, they have the resources to make a solution quicker than OS.
I do believe this site and the contest has pushed them harder showing demand. So they are releasing it early to people who want to "test" it. Apple didn't have to do this and just had us all wait. I prefer being able to get my laptop 100% now.

ok, well i say we need to just carry on and make this work out better than apple's bootcamp thing. Open Source has made Openoffice and linux and many other programs great. With a good community of people working together, we should beable to get this working fully, without the Beta label before apple does. If we don't make it, at least we tryed and made a stand.
edit:
great idea here, lets do like thebalaa said and take the settings from bootcamp and use it to improve this. if they can mess with us, we can mess with them.

Actually to get everything except the camera working. Camera is seen, just can't be used.
Also think of it this way. If your hardware burns up with even Apples beta solution, it is their fault and they will replace the equipment. If it burns up with xom (or other) solution, Apple can quicly say, warranty is null and void. I am not saying that the xom is a bad solution, it was the first and got me working. But working in a K-12 school district, looking at purchasing a bunch of these for next school year because they dual-boot, the administrator will definitely give the go ahead because Apple is supporting it. Then you know other vendors like Deep Freeze (security software) and others will end up supporting it somehow also.
Xom should continue to develop along with BAMBIOS and anything else. Competition makes people/companies take notice and work harder. It is when they don't have any competition (Microsoft), is when they get lazy.

Some have suggested that this dilutes the OS X experience, though I contend that this allows people to buy the machine and put Windows on it, though I would be shocked if many would buy the machine to never boot to OS X. Instead, I would think they'd keep the windows partition for applications they don't have on the Mac-side, and they would purchase new applications when necessary for OS X.

Apple did not include a driver for the TPM chip on the motherboard. When you go into the device manager you see 2 things listed under "Unknown Device" on is called PCI Device the other is called Unknown Device. The Unknown Device is the TPM chip. IF you download the file from here http://support.samsung.de/fileview.aspx?modelcode=NP-X60&fileid=849990&fileType=DR you can install it manualy and have one less unknown device

This is all normal behavior for XP machines. Always has been, and probably always will be. We've been spoilled rotten with OSX, so a few bugs here and there with XP aren't the end of the 'crap, and i just reformatted, again.' game.

Yes, I chose to repair the disk and while at it also repair the permissions. On the OS X install CD, you probably won't immediately notice the menu at the top of the screen, but there you can select the disk utility application and "Repair" your drive. Following that, quit the app, cancel the OS X install and be on your way.

Everyone please remember that the promlems you're having with Blue Screens, freezing and so forth, are what Windows users have been coping with for years.
This is all normal behavior for XP machines. Always has been, and probably always will be. We've been spoilled rotten with OSX, so a few bugs here and there with XP aren't the end of the 'crap, and i just reformatted, again.' game.
Happy dubooting!
lol. Hell no. You have not been spoiled by osx but by propaganda.
I have had OSX crashing more often durig the few compiles of my software on the mac than i ever had with windows during the last few years.

Compiling software is a whole other beast. Propaganda's all fun and stuff ;) but switching to OSX from a long time with XP years ago really made a huge difference for creative suites of software.

You need to reformat the drive and choose a GUID boot record. In Disk Utility it is under the options to choose when you are partitioning the drive.
I do not have the "Options" button. It goes Split, Delete, Revert, Partition from left to right. How can I get that to come up?

Actually compiling itself is easy and unproblemtatic. Networking with a pc was the problem aparently. Anyway. Just wanted to point out that having blue screens and crashes all over is defenetly not an every day problem.

Wow this runs amazing, I can play Roller Coaster Tycoon at full graphics on my MBP!!!! As for the boot selector, its just the one that's built into all Macs. Just reboot and hold down the option key, that's all it is. It just looks different because they made it look nicer on the Intel Macs but its the same thing that's been in Macs since day 1.

Damn u Apple, I appreciate the semi-offical blessing and support, but why couldn't you have done it yesterday so I didn't spend 4hrs last nite re-doing the system on the new machine.
Don't bitch. You are used a hacked up EFI to get Windows running. This is the #1 reason why I didn't run out and install Windows when a "solution" was found. It isn't Apple's fault that you hacked your computer up.

I'm not 100% sure how I'm supposed to reformat the various partitions (I've done the onmac install). Do I just do it through Disk Utility?
could someone please explain the steps for going back from the OnMac version of the dualboot to the Boot Camp one?
thanks very much.
Unfortunately you have to use disk utility (applications/utilities) to restore the hard drive to one partition. I experimented and the bootcamp utility insists that the internal drive have only one partition. As a matter of fact, if you don't get rid of the partition that was created by the onmac process, you can not install the firmware update.

I'd really like to buy a laptop (MBP) to replace my 1.6 GHz G5. And I don't want to spend $1000 on a PC to play ONE dumb (OK, fun) game.
The dual booting is just what I'm looking for.
BUT, does the X1600 have the horsepower for BF2? I've heard it's one of the most demanding games out there as far as graphics cards go.
If it does GREAT! I'll buy the MBP. Otherwise I'll have to wait until they announce the pro desktops (hopefully by summer...)
If anyone can let me know how well it runs I'd really appreaciate it!
Thanks,

Within an hour I was at the mac store purchasing my MBP 2.0GHz. After some chatting I stopped home to pick up my xp disk and headed back to work. The install was easy enough that a monkey to do it.
Presently I am installing HL2 and CSS. It is patching and I expect to be playing within the hour. This is my first MAC and I LOVE IT... Anyone want to buy a dell latitude or a highend gaming machine? (firesale :) )
I am just thankfull that they had MBPs in stock and I did not ahve to wait for a shipment form the apple store.
Cheers I am off to play CSS
PS I have noticed that the bootcamp is a bit flakey when you warm boot from OS 10 to XP. I hve found that it locks up; however when I go from XP to OS 10 I have no problems. Anyone else see this?

Were's the firmware? All I can seem to find is the Intel firmware... I thought Boot Camp would include it but apparently it doesn't. The links posted before don't work either... do you think there's a problem with the firmware if they took it down?
People please don't delete your firmware yet.... other's (like me) might need it.
I hope they update it or make sure the links work for the MacBook Pro firmware update cause otherwise I'm stuck with an error screen that tells me I don't have up-to-date firmware....
Any help would be appreciated...

I think it is great that Apple has decided to support this. But I am pissed that they didn't announce this in the beginning. They obviously have been working on it and knew about it from day 1, probably a year ago and certainly in January when they announced the Macintels.
It has been a fun ride these last weeks since XOM was released. I have enjoyed being part of the bleeding edge and have reveled in being part of history in the making. But honestly I would have preffered that Apple had stated its intentions in January. I would have waited until now or even until Leopard for dual boot support if I knew it was coming in this more supported and fully functional way by Apple.
It would be nice if the Apple method were more flexible - allowing multiple boot volumes with possibly different versions of Windows or Linux. Maybe this will happen with Leopard? Or maybe the open source option is still alive? :D

You can now use a Barts PE CD, put it in the drive, press c while booting the imac. I think Knoppix will work too, i´ll try this. With the firmware update, Apple gave the MacTel an additional bios, so i think every PC Boot-CD will work. Loads of possibilities :)

I think it is great that Apple has decided to support this. But I am pissed that they didn't announce this in the beginning.
This couldn't be much farther from what people ought to be feeling right now.
Until this contest, Apple had no intention of releasing something like Boot Camp anytime before Leopard. Even after the contest started, few analysts expected success, and fewer still expected people to be will to jump through the hoops needed to get it installed on their own system.
What they all learned was that:
- people really want to do this
- the effort was successful
- end users would put in the effort, even if it was a sub-optimal (non-Apple-like) experience.
Essentially, Apple finally realized it was going to be happening anyway, with or without their help. So now we have Boot Camp, and normal users can easily install XP.
It's a good thing, and wouldn't have happened without this contest and the publicity it generated. People should be proud.

Argh I'm getting all sorts of weird problems while trying to install Boot Camp.
First the drive wouldn't partition, then I got that working.
I then had Windows copying all it's files to the Windows partition but it kept stopping at certain files and saying it couldn't copy them. I wrote all these down.
Now, when it finished, I loaded the Windows partition by holding option as the computer loaded, and then when it got past the loading screen of Windows, I got a blue screen message telling me there is a Fatal System Error and "The system has been shut down".
Anyone know what the hell is going on?
I expected a 'smooth installation'...

Honestly it sounds like your Windows disk is bad (scratched or something). If it isn't copying the files, something is probably blocking the laser from reading the area on the disk.

If you get file copy errors, you need a new CD. That said, installation was not smooth on my MBP. Windows hung on the first boot. After rebooting and pickking "normal" from the menu, it came up. It froze one other time once in the windows UI, too. It seems to be stable now that the drivers are installed though. I've seen posts from other people with similar experiences.

Based on my experience with CS:S last night I think that you would be pushing the system hard to play BF2. I ahve the 2.0GHZ MBP with 256meg video and I was only seeing 75 FPS in CS:S at defualt settings. BF2 would play but would be pretty slow to load. Maybe if you had 2gig of ram it might shorten the load.
I need to spend some more time finetuning the HL2 setup but it will not replace the gaming desktop for sure.

This may not be the answer you want, but assuming you have a legitimately purchased CD Key and need another copy of the CD, you can buy the media for $20-$25 from places like CDW and PC Mall. When we buy licenses at work, we either buy the media or not, and the extra cost is $20-$25.
If that won't work for you, you can buy OEM copies of WinXP from places like Fry's (if you live near one) for a relatively cheap price.
