The MBP firmware update released today fails to install. Presumably because of the boot changes? Anyone get this to successfully install?

If someone was kind enough to release the apple drivers once he managed to burn the driver cd... Because I don't want to screw my XP partition up !! I had enough time spent installing it... and I want to try to install the drivers directly from XP if it's possible !!

[edit]
Well someone already did it !!

I've been following the instructions, but am unable to flash my firmware.

Am I the only person?

I hold in the power button, my power LED flashes, and then makes a loud beep, and then continues to boot.

I never see a progress bar.

When am I supposed to relese the power button?

Is this perhaps a problem due to xom.efi?

I've re-blessed boot.efi, to no avail...

Any help?

Apple's new solution is COMPLETELY incompatible with Narf/Blanka's patch (I think that Apple should hire them to work on dual-boot for 10.5)

Here's how to fix everything:
Image your XP partition (don't know that itwill work after the Apple method, haven't tested. If they did some crazy patching of the kernel it probably won't work).

Backup your OS X partition with SuperDuper! onto an external drive.

Now, erase your ENTIRE os x drive, and put your copy of OS X back on it.

Run all of apple's stuff (don't worry, it will non-destructively resize your partition) and then drop XP back onto that new partion.

Rock on.

I'm having the same problem, and reading on the Apple discussion boards, it seems to happen if your mac partition isnt your first partition. reformat, relove.

Done it and it works fine after a bit of tweaking. Ron the Apple Drivers exe and it sorts pretty much everything out.

Saves a lot of messing about reinstalling XP!!

Reformatting doesn't seem to be necessary to get the firmware on. At first, I was unable to get the firmware update to start when booted from my internal drive, same as the other reports. All I had to do was boot from my external backup (which only has the Mac partition on it) and re-run the firmware updater utility. On the next boot with the power key held in, it ran the firmware update process just fine.

Unfortunately, the next step fails. Boot Camp Assistant complains about the software being out of date even though I did the 10.4.6 update already. I suspect I'll have to reformat the internal drive to make it happy.

Hi,

already have reformatted my internal drive and Boot Camp still complains about my System being out of date and needs to be updated, although I have 10.4.6 installed.

Any tipps anyone?

Did you successuflly install the firmware update? (This is different than the 10.4.6 OS update).

Yes, I installed the firmware update. The only thing that I can think of is that there is still a problem with the EFi showing the small grey folder prior to starting up OS X.

My Boot-Rom Verison reads MBP11.0055.B02 and the updater tells me that my firmware ist up to date.

Bandito, could you describe in steps how you did it? What was the tweaking?

Not much, really. Just took out the bluetooth patch from the startup folder, then ran the apple driver installer exe, then followed the on-screen instructions while it loaded all the drivers.

One small thing.....

Before I started I reformated completely, did the firmware update, ran bootcamp and then set the XP partition. I then ran Disk Utility but could not format the XP partition, mount it or restore my original XP disk image. So, I ran bootcamp, booted into my XP SP2 install disk, let it run to the point where it formated my XP partition (I used FAT32), then held down the power button to switch off.

I then powered back up holding down the option key, booted into OSX. The XP partition was visible now, formated FAT32. I still could not restore the XP disk image to it, so I mounted the disk image and copied its entire contents to the XP partition, overwriting what was there. I then rebooted once again holding down the option key, selected the XP partition and held my breath.....

It booted cleanly, the screen resolution was low, but running the apple exe sorted out everything else.

I use MacDrive to access the OSX partition without difficulty.

Hope this helps.....

Okay,

I finally resolved it, although I am not sure what the problem with Boot Camp was. I used my OS X install CD to boot my MBP ans used Disk Utility to wipe my internal hard drive and first installed a single MS-DOS Volume on it. Afterwards I immediately partioned my drive with a single OS X volume and installed Mac OS X onto it. I then downloaded the OS X 10.4.6 (Combo) Updater and updated my newly installed system to 10.4.6.

Afterwards, Boot Camp would just run normally. It creaded the driver cd and I used my (german) XOM slipstream cd to install XP.

Now, I am just recovering my old system from my external hard drive and see, if applying the Combo Updater will fix the problems with Boot Camp on this install as well.

Windows XP Home SP1 installs without a hitch on a Mac Mini Core Solo/1GB Ram - but the Apple Drivers Installer continually crashes - first it throws up a dialog that says a "USB Composite Device" has been sucessfully installed - and then it "rolls back changes", and claims to have failed. Is this because of SP1? Why do all these patches and boot hacks require SP2? As far as I know, the changes in SP2 are mainly to do with networking and security!

The audio driver for the mac mini on the drivers page of the onmac.net wiki installs, but fails to provide actual audio. Are there any other drivers I can use?

Thanks,
Christopher
