Hey all,

I've poked around a bit to check up on this.

I have a OEM Windows XP "Restore" CD from the original manufacturer of my computer. I've kept the computer up to date, so it's got WinXP SP2.

Can anyone point me to a resource that might explain how to make the necessary install disk to put XP on my MBP? I've seen a few pages out there, but I have to admit that my technical competency, although pretty good, isn't quite enough to make such an assessment.

Thanks in advance.

i could be wrong, but i think you need an original XP SP2 CD, not a upgrade or a "restore" cd....

good luck!

I was successful today installing today using a Dell OEM SP1 XP Home edition disc. I used Autostreamer (http://mhtools.knoware.nl/raptor/autostreamer/AutoStreamer.exe) to create a copy of the CD and update it to SP2. You just need to download SP2 to your hard drive, pop the CD in the drive and point Autostreamer to your CD and to SP2 on your hard drive. It will then create what is called an "ISO" file, an image of your new CD on the hard drive. You can then use Nero 7 (http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-demo.php) to burn the ISO to a disc (make sure to finalize).

After you install, you'll have to activate Windows within 30 days. Make sure that you are no longer using the copy of Windows on any other machine (piracy is wrong, even if MS is a pretty lame company). Because your machine won't match the OEM disc, you'll have to activate by phone. Just tell them that you had to put in some new hardware (e.g motherboard) in your machine and that it is not being used on any other machines. Essentially, buying a new computer is really just replacing most of the parts of your old computer.

I used autostreamer and Nero 7 to slipstream service pack 2 with my Dell Windows xp professional service pack 1a restore disc. Was yours a restore disc as well? The boot camp webpage says install disc, how does a restore disc change the outcome? what does OEM mean?

Hey,

I just tried Autostreamer and it works great!

I tested the CD and it works fine, bootable.

I used my Dell Windows XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 1 CD and my Windows Service Pack 2 Update CD (ordered for free from Microsoft).

When I get my iMac (on Aug 25th), I'll test it out and see how it goes.

If it doesn't install, I'll just buy Windows.
