Just out of curiousity. Does anyone know how long the Beta will let you use Windows for? I think it's great that Apple is supporting this, but if Windows is just gonna crap out after a certain amount of time then I'll stick with XOM.

I think it's pretty retarded how instead of just telling us how long the Beta is good for, Apple instead says "Remember to backup windows, don't use windows for important programs and documents, bla bla bla". Why not just tell us?

Edit: I just read this:

I read the license agreement and there is no limitation on time installed, just on distribution beyond Apple.

Read more here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/terms.html

If someone could confirm this that would be great. I'm not too keen on understanding license and legal lingo :P

I assume it works til Leopard release. I don't really remember ever seeing a date, but it would make sense, since its part of the OS at that point. Definitely an incentive to buy it I would say.

Quoting the license:

3. Term of License. The term of this License shall commence upon your installation or use of the Apple Software and will terminate automatically without notice from Apple upon the next commercial release of the Apple Software, or September 30, 2007, whichever occurs first.

So, you are allowed to use the beta until OS X 10.5 comes out. (I doubt that Apple will delay the release until after September 2007.)

First IANAL(I am not a Lawyer)

For the Legaleese challenged the license agreement is a standard boilerplate agreement.

First they say what you can use their software for.

Second they say that the license is only temporary until September 30, 2007 or Apple releases a new version of their OS. This is not to say it won't work past that date, You just don't have permission to continue to use it past that date. If apple caught you doing so they could proscute you for using unlicensed software. The BSA can fine you upto $100,000 for each unlicensed software you have installed.

Finally they claim no liability for anything this software does.
This is clearly Beta software. As such it should not be used in any mission critical application, and if you decide to use it at all you should frequently backup any important data and programs that you have.

"THE APPLE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE. "

&

"TO THE EXTENT NOT PROHIBITED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL APPLE BE LIABLE FOR PERSONAL INJURY, OR ANY INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION OR ANY OTHER COMMERCIAL DAMAGES OR LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE APPLE SOFTWARE, HOWEVER CAUSED, REGARDLESS OF THE THEORY OF LIABILITY (CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE) AND EVEN IF APPLE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR PERSONAL INJURY, OR OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THIS LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU"

End Lesson

So how's this going to work for when time runs out? Is my computer just going to say one day "haha! No more Windows for you!"?

If its anything like Safari Beta, it just will not install, and it will not let you launch Boot Camp, but it should still allow you to switch between Mac OS X and Windows. I just switched to BootCamp and I'm great!

Thanks for the info. I think that's perfect then. If people want to use boot camp then they should buy Leopard when it comes out. I know I will. If Tiger is this great, then just imagine what the next OS will be like!

But it's good to know that we can use bootcamp until then. I thought trial period meant like ... 30 days and then, as GrahamVH said, "HA! No windows for you!"

Haha that would be hilarious actually, to see that notification.
