View Full Version : Did NOT work on my MacBook - partition trouble
organik

And I tried it TWICE, following the instruction to a T -
Basically, partitioning in disk util I created the msdos xp partition and the osx partition as per the instructions...
when I get to the install xp step, my partition table reads:
C: Partition1 (EFI)[Fat32] 200mb
Unpartitioned space 47698mb
E: Partition2 [Unknown] 47370mb
Unpartitioned space 126mb
So, the first time I went ahead and partitioned the second bit (which I later discovered the instructiones said specifically not to do) - I install XP on that, when the reboot happens to continue install - bootloader can't find it!
So, I reformat, reinsall osx follow the procedure exactly as per instructions, and when I get to the XP install - same partitions! Exactly! So now I'm stuck here - how do I get my partition table to look like the instructions? So I don't have to partition to install xp on C:
Anyone? I've spent about 6 hours on this today and I don't want to do anything AGAIN that's not going to work...
I'd LOVE to get this working so I can sell my Inspiron (I need xp for work).

I'm so happy I'm not the only one with this issue.
I have a 17" iMac with 2Gb ram and a 250Gb drive.
I've reinstalled about 7 times today different ways and have had absolutely no luck. I got the xp cd burned, the efi loader in, but every time I hit the select partition section, I get presented with options that don't work.
The first time I tried, I formated the drive with 3 partitions. no go.
After that I've tried over and over following the directions to the letter with no success. I can get xp installed if i create a new partition, but once the loader starts up, and i pick the windows flag, it immediately flips over and just sits there and does nothing.
I gave up for the day. Hope someone can give us advice on this one...

I am also having the same problem. I've tried doing the process four times. The back out prcoess to get the OSX partition back working is a pain.
Boot form the OSX CD
Launch Terminal
run diskutil and repartition the drive to HFS+
This will get you back working with OSX but still after following the infromation given, no success with the XP partition during install.

C: Partition1 (EFI)[Fat32] 200mb
Unpartitioned space 47698mb
E: Partition2 [Unknown] 47370mb
Unpartitioned space 126mb
I had the same problem the first time through... so I picked the second item (not 'Partition2') and it proceeded along with the install. However, upon reboot - it did not go to the XP install screen. I restarted the process by booting with the CD in the drive, and the this time, the partition list looked ok and it worked!
I'm not sure if that helps... but that's what my experience was.

I am having the same problem on my macbook pro. I partition as describe. When I reboot with the bootloader- it gives me the choice to select windows, and then it hangs- way longer than 3 min...
I then force a hard reboot, and the xp partition is gone???
HELP!

I am one of the tester. I have a macbook pro 2GHz.
I had the same problem (now have done the installation 3 times) with the partition problem during the 1st phase of WinXP install. After the 1st phase it will hang. Just shut down (hold power for 5 secs) and turn it back on with the CD still in it. Let the 1st phase of installation to restart again. This time you will see the correct partition table.
I used FAT32 because I want to have access from Mac OSX for sharing files.

Still no luck on my MPB. I partition as described, but the bootloader hangs (grey windows icon) If I leave it as free space and let windows format it will that work? How do you format it as a NTFS format? As I understand it, I can do a mac format, a ms-dos, or a unix. What format is UNIX? NTFS? So close...but I am giving up for the night and getting some sleep. I have reformated and installed osx 5 times.
I also tried to power off when it gets stuck, but then the ms-dos format is gone, and I am left with 200m free space, but no dod format. What am I doing wrong? Anyone?

have tried the install 3 times. even rebuilt install cd.
everything runs pretty smooth, but upon reboot, I eject the cd after initial setup, and when I select windows, I get an upsidedown windows logo and the install process doesn't continue.
anybody have this issue?
thanks.

I have this problem when using an NTFS partition. I tried again with FAT32 and it works fine. For my purposes the filesystem doesnt matter. Im on a MB Pro - seems a lot of MB Pro users have the same problem - try FAT32 - you can run a utility to convert to NTFS at a later date.

Well, a fresh morning, a fresh reformat and install of os x, and I am still getting a hang at the windows grey boot screen. I have waited for well over 3 minutes. My drives are xp (msdos) os x (mac). I have made 3 slipstream discs. Now if I force a reboot, the dos partition will be gone. HELP

i want to format FAT32 but it only gave me 2 choices:
NTFS (Quick)
NTFS
so i chose the second one. did i do something wrong? i wanted it in FAT32. is there a way to do it later?

I read somewhere that if your partition is too large, then you will only be given the NTFS options. My partition is 10GB, and I get all the NTFS and FAT option (Quick / Slow)

FAT32 has a 32GB partition limitation. Over that, and it's NTFS only.

C: Partition1 (EFI)[Fat32] 200mb
Unpartitioned space 47698mb
E: Partition2 [Unknown] 47370mb
Unpartitioned space 126mb
I get the exact same file map on my 17" iMac with 1 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. The installer won't allow me to use E:, so I use the former unpartitioned space. I've tried this exactly twice (repartitioned two times), and I get the same exact issue both times; the Windows installer proceeds without issue, but once it reboots, the Windows logo flips upside down after pressing enter. It utterly sucks. I'm gonna try the FAT32 suggestion.

I had a few problems using modified xp installation cds. I went through about 3 different compilations until I found one that worked. I would suggest sticking to the original xp pro sp2 cd.

The same exact thing happens here. I used FAT32 too. I enabled console mode (press F4 before hitting enter for the windows boot) and it said something about an invalid boot partition. Crap. I don't understand why some of us are having problems but others aren't...

I feel your pain, man. However, right after posting that, I got Windows installed, and am typing this with Firefox under Windows XP. The solution is here:

Anyway, what we really need are video drivers. Windows XP runs very well, but the video is crap. Moving windows around and scrolling is horribly glitchy.
