I was trying to copy a restorable image of my OS X drive to a folder on an external drive since i messed up my partitions w/ parted. Anyway, Does anyone have any suggestions for a good, free disk image maker (not a demo) that is universal and works on an intel mac.

Disk Utility should do anything you need in this regard. Just make sure that you create a read only image, and "Scan Image for Restore" when done (it will take quite a while). It's intended for imaging machines for corporate or lab settings, but works great as a slow but complete backup program.

Carbon Copy Cloner by Mike Bombich is exactly what you're looking for. I cloned my hard drive (twice! once for XoM, once for BC) to an external HD, reformatted and repartitioned, reinstalled the OS, hooked up my Firewire drive, and used the "Transfer information from another Mac" option. Worked like a charm.

The diff between DiskUtil and CCC is CCC can create a fully-functional, BOOTABLE clone of any Mac-formatted HD. I've used it extensively (over 100 times) and only had issues 1 time (stuck while cloning Applications folder).

Check it out, it works great under Rosetta, no issues.
