Feedback occurs when a mic is close to the output, in this case the speakers. Are your external speakers on? If so, try muting the main output while recording.
... I don't think anyone has found a way to "turn off" the speakers without muting them yet. Not sure though.

What about a USB headset? Has anyone tried that? On most computers that will shut off the speaker output and divert it to the USB headset.

Doesn't the MBP have a built-in mic?

BGD, yeah it does,
in fact, I was playing DOD:S and yelling at people on my MBPs internal mic. I was happy to see that worked.

I tried using an external headset (http://www.pintmaster.com/wordpress/index.php/20060309/sennheiser-pc-150-noise-cancelling-headphones/) with skype and I couldnt switch to the headset's mic, I could only use my MB Pro mic. The other thing that was kinda embarassing is I didnt realize that my coworkers could hear everything coming out of the speakers.

The internal mic on my iMac 17" works fine, I was using it on MSN last night.
You may just need to fiddle with the gain/volume controls for your microphone. If you go into the volume panel, you can actually turn off playback output for your mic, whilst keeping it open for input.
