Hi,
I have installed WinXP on my MacBook Pro using bootcamp. For some reason, the screen savers and display timeout don't work. Is anyone else's working for them with the MacBook?? Thanks.

i've decided to stop using windows until there is a fix for this issue. i tried the wizmo utility at the suggestion of another board member and it ended up messing up my lcd temporarily.

after i "awakened" my monitor from wizmo's putting it to sleep there was intense flickering on the upper and lower parts of the LCD, i thought this would be temporary but it lasted for over 15 minutes. don't use wizmo if u have a MBP.

i shut down my computer for the rest of the night and thank God it was fine this morning.

Screensaver does not work on mine, for now, I just lower the brightness as much as possible before leaving...

use the option+shift+F1/F2 combo to adjust....

Don't know if this makes a difference, but screen savers didn't work with the XOM approach either, for me at least.

Be careful with that! I found the apple brightness app to be buggy. Sometimes windows will just reboot without warning when you change brightness settings. Hope this is solved soon.... :(

For now, whenever I leave my computer for a while I just press the power button or close the lid... either entering ibernation or standby mode (configurable under control panel > power options).

hope this helps... cheers.

I agree with deadelvis. I did get standby mode working perfectly, but still no timeout, so for now I just close the lid when I'm not using it. I really, really hope the timeout gets a solution!

I've got an OK temporary solution for you guys. Certainly it is not as good as the automatic timed way, but it will allow you to protect your screen better than lowering the brightness.

1. Go to you WINDOWS\System 32 directory.
2. Find your favorite screensaver (it is a .scr file). You can find all of the screensavers in this folder by pressing ctrl-f, turning off "search subfolders" in the advanced options, and searching for "*.scr"
3. Right click on the file (using a program like Applemouse or Input remapper found elsewhere in this forum will allow you to right click if you do not have a 2 button mouse) and select "create shortcut"
4. It will tell you a shortcut cannot be placed in that folder, but will offer to place one on the desktop instead.
5. You can rename this shortcut, (since the name automatically given is kind of ugly) and place it wherever you would like. If you right click the shortcut and go to properties, you can even give it a shortcut key so that you simply have to press ctrl-F1 or something similar to launch your screen saver.

Then, just press the assigned shortcut key whenever you need to leave the computer running (e.g. to download a large file). I tested, and at least with Firefox, a finished download does not wake the computer from the screensaver.

this problem is one of my biggest concerns with running windows on an intel mac.. i would be happy with being able to turn the screen off. i did this when i used my external lcd monitor via dvi to vga adapter

You can turn the monitor off. As far as I know... there's two options for that:

1) Enter stand by mode (by pressing the power button/closing lid)
2) Set brightness to minimum (the monitor effectively turns off if you do so)

(as posted on another thread here as well, sorry for the dup)

Here's a fix for the issue with the screensaver not coming on when running Windows XP on the MacBook:

http://www.verysimple.com/products.php/manual_ss.html

It's not really a true fix. It doesn't dim the screen or support the power management features, but at least you can get the screensaver to come on automatically until apple manages to fix the actual cause.

This is a nice fix.

The only problem is that ANNOYING box that pops up everytime the computer boots.

Here's a link to a simple app that will help you manage your power on the MacBook Pro. Note the "Device" feature has only been tested on the 17" model, so no guarantees that it'll work on the 15". Contact info on the site. Feedback welcome.

very cool ashmorgan! i'm gonna give it a try. any interest in releasing the source? i was not quite curious enough to figure that part out myself!

ilkevinli - yea, i prob should have made a setting or something to not show the form at startup. i did it only because it's the only visual indication that it does anything - and i was too lazy to really do much more with it!
