Install Media Creation

Quick question for someone who has already gone through this wonderful process... is there a technical reason for the reliance on Nero for the creation of the install disc? I have a PC in a closet someplace, but if it's possible to use an OSX burner I'd rather spare myself the aesthetic trauma. Most of the steps described for the nero process seem repeatable in other programs, but can't tell if the .nrb file contains any special settings.
